The Porsche 997, produced from 2004 to 2012, is widely regarded by 911 historians and enthusiasts as the generation that restored the visual identity the 911 had temporarily lost with the 996. The 996 generation’s distinctive teardrop-shaped headlights — derided by many 911 owners as “fried egg” headlights and shared with the more affordable Boxster — were replaced on the 997 with round headlights that echoed the classic 911 silhouette from the 993 and earlier air-cooled generations. The 997 also restored a visually distinct front end for the 911 compared to the Boxster, ending the shared-headlight controversy of the 996 era. Like the 991, the 997 is divided into two meaningfully different sub-generations. The 997.1 (2004–2008) used naturally aspirated flat-six engines in Carrera and Carrera S specifications — 3.6L producing 325 horsepower and 3.8L producing 355 horsepower — with a traditional throttle body fuel injection system and a manual or Tiptronic gearbox. The 997.2 (2008–2012) introduced direct fuel injection (DFI) to the Carrera flat-six, raising Carrera output to 345 horsepower and Carrera S to 385 horsepower, and introduced the PDK dual-clutch gearbox as an option alongside the manual — PDK becoming the transmission that redefined Porsche’s performance gearbox offering. The 997.1 and 997.2 share the same overall body architecture and the same exterior panel geometry, making them the same cover specification. The 997 Carrera models have narrower rear wheel arches than the 997 Carrera 4, Turbo, and GT variants. The 997 Turbo and Turbo S use the wide body with rear wheel arch extensions and a fixed rear spoiler. The 997 GT3 RS 4.0, the final naturally aspirated 997 GT variant, produced 500 horsepower from a 4.0L flat-six and is regarded by many as the last great naturally aspirated road-going 997.
